Jake and I met in
high school. My first memory of him was when we had a Valentine's Day dinner at
the church for the youth group. I was sitting with my friends at a table and
him and a few of his friends asked if they could sit at our table as well. I
didn't talk to him much that day but I remember him making really cheesy jokes, that was what kind of sparked my interest. Jake’s first memory of me was when we were on
the bus to winter camp. We started
talking a lot and during that whole camp we would hang out. We started hanging out a lot more for the
following summer. I went with him to Magic
Mountain where he got me to go on all the roller coasters and I introduced him
to my friends and our scary movie nights on Friday nights. During that time we really built a great
foundation of friendship and on his 17th birthday, after another wonderful day
at Magic Mountain, he asked me to be his girlfriend.
We dated for 7 months
and during that time I would attend his football and basketball games and he
would come to my volleyball games. We
would hang out on the weekends and we got to know each other’s families. We
then broke up (I was 16 and immature), but despite breaking up, Jake was always
there as a really good friend. He went
off to play football at APU and a year later, I decided to go into Social Work
at APU. While at college Jake and I
would randomly go to chapel together or grab lunch. We wouldn’t see each other often but if we
ever ran into each other we never ran out of things to talk about. He started to build great friendships with a
group of guys and I was able to find some amazing friends of my own. Despite not seeing each other much, for the
next 3 years we would grab some dinner or lunch on campus. We would not only talk about our friends,
college life, and our classes, but really discuss theological questions and
what it means to be a Christian in and out of APU. We talked about hard topics that are
sometimes ignored by the Christian Church and we would talk about the Bible and
things we had learned in our Bible classes. During these years, our friendship became
a lot deeper and we both started have feelings for each other again, and then
on August 3, right before my senior year and Jake’s last semester of college,
he asked me to coffee. After talking for
a good 4 hours (yikes!), we both admitted that we liked each other a lot, and that
we were going to start dating.
The following year
was so amazing. We had so much fun
together and with our families and in November (Thanks to Landon Cooper asking
if we were “in love”) we both said I love you to each other. During that year
Jake and I both graduated, Jake started teaching and I moved back to Simi
Valley. On August 23, Jake walked with
me to the park and after playing some football, I was walking back towards him and
he got down on one knee, pulled out a beautiful ring and asked me to be his
wife. It was one of the most wonderful
days and soon there will be an even better day and we are so excited to have
you all there to witness the happy event.
